RJ Mitchell's Brilliant 'Blood Acre' Book Tour

The Blood Acre book tour saw RJ Mitchell take to the road and visit WHSmith stores up and down the country, shaking hands and signing books at every stop. From August through to December, the Scottish author worked tirelessly and has been handsomely rewarded for his efforts. With 1,000 books sold on the tour and more to bookshops all over the UK, The Blood Acre is the best selling Matthew James Publishing title of 2019. Here's a little insight into RJ Mitchell's success.

The Blood Acre was the best-selling book of 2019 for Matthew James Publishing, not least due to the incredible work of author RJ Mitchell. The prolific Scottish crime author, who had penned four previous novels in his successful DS Thoroughgood series, promoted his book on the road for four months. Working with the fantastic team at WHSmith, Mitchell visited stores in Scotland and England to sign books and personally bring his latest work to the public.

Nominated for a People's Book Prize, Mitchell's writing utilises his time as a police officer to make the city that DS Thoroughgood inhabits and writing about the fictionalised gangland streets of Glasgow as real as possible. And it's clear that the author's no-punches-pulled style of writing has resonated with the public. As we headed into December, the author began to lap himself — returning to stores that he'd visited in the beginning, with readers eager to see what Thoroughgood had gotten up to in his latest adventure.

The 2019 tour marks the fourth time RJ Mitchell has collaborated with WHSmith on a tour, all of which have been immense successes. "I am absolutely delighted to have completed my fourth national tour with WHSmith and broken the 1000 sales mark for the third consecutive year. Right across the country from Aberdeen to Ayr and Inverness to Dumfries, the reaction to The Blood Acre has been really positive and I've really enjoyed talking to people about my book and meeting some very interesting folk along the way." Signings close to home weren't the only thing on the agenda this time, however. We were pleased to see RJ venture into England for signings in Manchester and Newcastle — we'll be hoping for more of those in 2020.

"I would just like to say a huge thanks to everyone who bought my books on the tour and took the time to talk to me," says Mitchell. "I also owe a huge debt of gratitude to WHSmith for the continued support of both my books and myself."

WHSmith Central Scotland Director Brian MacIntyre added:  "WHSmith is once again delighted to have promoted RJ Mitchell and his superb thriller The Blood Acre and sales figures of 1015 is testimony both to the enduring popularity of RJ and DS Thoroughgood," says MacIntyre.  "As a retailer, it has always been important to us to support Scottish writers and especially one as committed to his work as RJ."

Now, Mitchell is looking to the future with a new book on the horizon: "I have now started work on the next installment of the Thoroughgood series, 'The Hammer'... The plot will take Thoroughgood to Manchester on the trail of a notorious Glasgow villain and I can guarantee it will be every bit as explosive as The Blood Acre."

The Blood Acre is available now from all good bookshops and you can order directly from Matthew James Publishing here.
