Inside MJP | Meet Our New Hire, Anthony

Hey Anthony, why not tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from, how old are you?

Well…my name’s Anthony, obviously, I’m 24 and originally from Salford, Greater Manchester. I’ve just moved to Marple to live with my girlfriend and to become a part of the Matthew James family.

Before working at MJP what experience did you have?

I’ve been working in and around marketing, publicity and PR for about eight years. So yeah, I started young. I’ve done everything from standard office admin jobs to working in music promotion, events management and even in the video game industry. I’ll be the first to admit that my experience with publishing was limited, but the majority of what I’m doing here isn’t too different to what I’ve done previously. It’s been nice to find that a lot of my skills have been able to transfer over to working here and I hope that my experience with other media will be beneficial too.

When I approached you about working with us you jumped at the chance, what attracted you to MJP and the work we do?

I’ve always loved books and am an avid reader – you kind of have to be in this job – so to work ‘behind the scenes’ was something that immediately interested me. Not only that, but I loved how passionate everyone at Matthew James seemed to be about the job. I’d been friends with James for a couple of years too, so working alongside someone I get on with so well was great too. The need for a new challenge played a part as well and it seemed like I’d be able to put a lot of my experience to good use in different ways here – and I was right. It’s been a great couple of months.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job has to be meeting with authors and working through the initial stages of a book. Talking to an author about their book is so inspiring. Just hearing about their ideas, the things that worked and those that didn’t and, again, just how passionate they are about their work is great – it just makes me want to work harder for them. Having that background also helps me with some early marketing ideas too.

Where do you see MJP in the next 5 years?

In five years time I’d like Matthew James to have become a name that readers know they can rely on. We’ve got a fantastic and loyal audience already, but to grow that into a nationally (maybe even internationally) recognised name would be amazing. Take this with a pinch of salt if you want, but we’re working on some fantastic, genre spanning, projects with some brilliant creators right now and it would be fantastic for these books to form the basis of what we want MJP to become.

What’s your favourite book?

My favourite book is ‘On The Road’ by Jack Kerouac. I love everything about it. Kerouac paints that period of America in such a vibrant and exciting way, a way that is very different to others writing at the same time. The sense of adventure created within it made me want to travel, to do the things I loved and to do things  just for ‘kicks’. It also taught me a lot about people and responsibility – lessons I won’t forget in a hurry.

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead who would it be?

Honestly, i’d love to have dinner with Morrissey. The Smiths have been my favourite band forever and I think I could pick Morrissey’s brain for hours. Just sitting with him, talking about music, life, literature and everything in between sounds fascinating. Of course, this would all rely on him letting me. Let’s face it, he probably wouldn’t. Still, I think he’d be a riveting dinner guest. I’d leave with a story, that’s for sure.

We all know James is awesome, but just how awesome is he?
