Growing, Expanding And Migrating North

The Big Move is a series of blog posts detailing the process of moving Matthew James Publishing up North. In this series of short posts, we’ll be talking about everything from the heavy lifting to our new home in Marple whilst keeping tabs on things down in Essex at the same time.

Matthew James Publishing is growing, expanding and migrating North.

The past three years have been fantastic for us, from both a publishing and personal standpoint. We’ve released some incredible books by brilliant authors and our programs for schools – Come And See and People Of God – are continuing to prove successful. Support like this is incredibly humbling and we couldn’t be more grateful: It’s going to allow MJP to do even bigger things in the future, but expansion is required to do that.

Of course, Matthew James has and always will be a family publisher as far as we’re concerned. For over twenty years we have published with ideals and, thankfully, that has now allowed us to make some exciting decisions and pursue ventures that we hadn’t even thought possible when this company was founded – this includes our latest growth spurt.

It’s a move that hasn’t come easy, but we feel that a move North will only benefit the business further. Of course our roots will always be in Essex, but we are slowly transitioning to run the majority of Matthew James from our new Northern offices. Located in Marple, a town in Stockport just outside of Manchester, the new Matthew James Publishing offices (and warehouse space) are only going to aid our upward trajectory even more as we fight the good fight as independent publishers.

“Go back?” he thought. “No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!” – J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

Obvious literary significance aside, we’ve found Marple to be an incredible hub for all sorts of businesses. Just as you have supported Matthew James Publishing, in recent years so has this town. From running the business from a back bedroom office, we have now taken up residence in one of the area’s most iconic and historic buildings – Goyt Mill (pictured). A bastion of industry in Marple, we are incredibly happy to have found such an excellent new home.

The move is ongoing and it was during the planning stages that we decided to hold our, recently announced, Warehouse Clearance Sale. Not only will it make the move easier, but we’re happy to be able to offer our loyal supporters some of these rare, hard to find or otherwise out of print titles at such a low price. Of course, we’d be awful publishers if we didn’t love books, so we want to see every last one of them find good a home.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be documenting the move with blog posts, photo galleries, interviews and through posts on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. So please watch this space and follow us as we step forward into the latest chapter of Matthew James Publishing.
